⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Fujieda Yoshino
Age: 19 (assuming the events of the series took place over the course of a year)
Canon: Digimon Savers
Canon Point: Post-series, but before the epilogue

Background: (Note - some of the notes about her early life are headcanon extrapolated from the character's canonical background.)

Yoshino was born as the youngest of three sisters. As a child, she was motivated to excel by her parents - they were by no means abusive, but their desire to see their daughter succeed wore heavily upon Yoshino, and created a lingering sense of self doubt that stayed with her all of her life.

As a young girl, Yoshino went to school with a young boy named Hitoshi Hanamura. Hitoshi was picked on for being overweight, and Yoshino was one of the few other students that was kind to him. This would have an impact on an event later in her life.

One night, during a piano recital, Yoshino was overcome by her anxieties, and was unable to play, effectively embarrassing herself in front of a large group of people. After the recital, she stayed alone backstage, where she was moved to tears. Then, however, a mysterious voice called out to her, leading her back to the piano she'd been unable to play before. Yoshino was able to play it as the voice sang along with her. Then, an egg appeared from a ray of light that had been shining down on her, seemingly connected to the voice that had contacted her.

The egg was a Digi-Egg - one that hatched into a digimon called Budmon. Though the circumstances for Budmon's appearance were very mysterious, she and Yoshino became fast friends. When Budmon evolved into Lalamon, the song that hey had performed together became the basis for Lalamon's own "Sing a Song" attack.

With her partner, Yoshino drew the attention of an organization that was dedicated to investigating phenomena related to Digimon and the Digital World. This organization was called DATS (Digital Accident Tactics Squad). Yoshino was confirmed to have a Digi-Soul, which in her world, was able to trigger a digimon's evolution. Lalamon and Yoshino had formed something more than an emotional connection - or perhaps, this second connection was due to that emotional bond.

When Lalamon was proven to not be a danger to humans, she was allowed to stay with Yoshino. This widened the gulf between her and her family, who were taken aback by the digimon. When Yoshino turned sixteen, she became a member of DATS herself, and lived there until she became a legal adult and moved into her own apartment. Though she was a competent agent, her sense of doubt kept her from excelling, and she did not begin to reach her full potential until some time later.

As a member of DATS, she formed a friendship with her commanding officer, Rentarou Satsuma, whom she came to see as a father figure.

After two years as a member of DATS, Yoshino remained in her position as a field agent. The greatest adventure of her life would not begin, however, until the day when she and Lalamon investigated a digimon that had been code-named "Raptor-1." The so-called Raptor-1 had escaped from DATS, and when she and Lalamon found him, she found that Raptor-1, or Agumon as he was properly called, had engaged a human in battle.

This human was named Masaru Daimon, and prior to facing Raptor-1, he had engaged a number of rival students in combat. Masaru and Raptor-1 battled each other to a draw while Yoshino looked on, and once it was finished, she and her partner attempted to arrest them. They escaped, and Yoshino was forced to approach Masaru on her own. She told him about DATS, and asked him to turn over Agumon. When this didn't work, she lied to him about Digimon needing a special food made only at DATS to avoid starvation. Masaru agreed to go with her, and learned more from Captain Satsuma. However, this meeting was interrupted by Agumon's supposed attack of a hamburger restaurant. Yoshino and Masaru went to investigate, and discovered the real perpetrator was a digimon called Cockatorimon. Yoshino was kept from participating in the battle, and was forced to watch as Masaru evolved his new partner to GeoGreymon for the first time.

Almost immediately after these events, Yoshino was ordered to live with Masaru and his family until she managed to convince him and Agumon to join DATS. At this time, Yoshino developed a friendly relationship with Masaru's mother, Sayuri, and his sister, Chika. Later, Masaru and Yoshino investigated a Digimon related event at Chika's school. A digimon called Kunemon had fed into the desires of a young student and devoured the school pets that he had been charged with taking care of, and attacked Yoshino and Masaru when this was discovered. Yoshino attempted to stop the digimon by evolving her partner to Sunflowmon, but in the end, it once again came down to Masaru and Agumon to win the day.

After this, Masaru decided to join DATS, and Yoshino served alongside him and their other teammate, Touma H. Norstein, who returned to DATS Japan from Europe some time later.
Some time later, Yoshino's childhood friend, Hitoshi Hanamura (now known by the stage name of Neon), became suspected of harboring a Digimon. Because of their past relationship, Yoshino went undercover, and struck up a relationship with him. This drew a good deal of unwanted publicity towards her, and what's more, her feelings towards Neon began to interfere with the case. In the end, Neon and his digimon were exposed, and Yoshino was forced to perform the difficult task of erasing his memory.

Time went on, and Yoshino became increasingly doubtful of her performance, especially in comparison to Touma and Masaru, who were quickly advancing in terms of strength. Eventually, Yoshino, Lalamon, and their team-mates were give a mission to go to their universe's Digital World and stop a digimon called Mercurimon, who they mistakenly believed to be eroding the barrier between the two worlds. There, they encountered a young boy named Ikuto Noguchi, who had been stranded there for much of his life and was hostile towards human beings.

The group escaped Ikuto, and began traveling towards Mercurimon's location. Along the way, they would stumble into various traps, including one waiting for them in a ravine controlled by a digimon called MetalPhantomon. After MetalPhantomon's servants captured them, the Cyborg Digimon attempted to absorb their hearts and trapped all three humans in their nightmares. Yoshino was forced to relive one of her more traumatizing childhood memories. After the group escaped, Yoshino quickly fell ill, having apparently contracted a virus native to the Digital World. Yoshino would later transfer the virus to Ikuto in a second encounter, which forced Ikuto's partner Falcomon to help Masaru and Touma find the cure for it.

After Yoshino recovered, her feelings of doubt had become almost overwhelming. Ikuto and Falcomon attacked them again… but their battle was interrupted by the traitorous Gotsumon, who one of Mercurimon's minions, and his Mammon subordinate. Yoshino, Touma, Lalamon, and Gaomon were separated from Masaru, and Touma became injured. Yoshino's anxieties overwhelmed her, which made her unable to act when Lalamon was forced to defend them Mammon. However, Lalamon used her "Sing a Song" attack, which rekindled Yoshino's memories of their first meeting. Realizing what Lalamon meant to her, Yoshino snapped out it, and upon realizing her inner strength, summoned the next stage of her Digi-Soul. She evolved Lalamon to her Perfect stage, Lilamon, and together, they stopped Mammon.

Their mission went on, and eventually, they discovered that Mercurimon was innocent, and that the real villain was a man named Akihiro Kurata. They also gained Ikuto's trust at one point, and after Mercurimon was tragically killed by Kurata's creations, they all became a single team. In their attempts to stop Kurata, they were labeled as traitors by the Japanese government thanks to the man's machinations. They later escaped to the Digital World, where they became the targets of Kurata's minions: Kouki, Ivan, and Nanami. It was in a battle with these three that Yoshino and her comrades first triggered their "Ultimate" Digi-Souls, which allowed their partners to evolve to the Ultimate level for the first time (in Lalamon's case, a digimon called Rosemon). After this, the group became the defenders of their Digital World's "Holy Capital", which rested on the back of a digimon called ElDoradimon. This became the site of a great battle between them and Kurata's forces, and Yoshino personally battled Ivan, who had become enamored with her. Together, Yoshino and Lalamon defeated Ivan's powered up form, BioSpinomon.

This was not enough to save ElDoradimon, however, and Kurata used the digimon's life force to awaken a digimon called Belphemon. Belphemon was eventually defeated, though, through the power of Masaru and Agumon's final form, ShineGreymon Burst Mode. This came with a price, though, and ended up creating a huge rift between the Human and Digital Worlds. This earned the human world the malice of the "god" of the Digital World, Yggdrasil, who had come to inhabit the body of Masaru's father, Suguru Daimon. Yggdrasil ordered his servants, the Royal Knights, to destroy the human world, and the DATS team was forced to fend them off. It was through a battle with Duftmon that Yoshino was able to trigger Lalamon's own Burst Mode.

Eventually, Yggdrasil was separated from Suguru, and it ultimately met defeat at Masaru's hand. The barrier between worlds was repaired, and DATS made the decision to close off access to the Digital World. Yoshino and Lalamon went their separate ways, as the latter wanted to share everything she had learned alongside humans with the rest of her kind. Ultimately, Masaru went with Lalamon and the other Digimon, as he wanted to continue fighting alongside Agumon.

Note: The following relates to the crossover that occurs in the third series of "Digimon Xros Wars", which unites a number of characters from the Digimon anime series. Yoshino was not actually seen, but Masaru's presence along with the fact that Ikuto makes a cameo and the indication that numerous other characters are helping out worldwide justifies, in my opinion, the headcanon that Yoshino was present for these events offscreen.

A short time later, Yoshino was briefly reunited with Lalamon when they were both approached by a mysterious "Clock shop owner" and his partner, Clockmon. The pair came from another universe, and conscripted Yoshino and Lalamon's help in defeating an entity known as Quartzmon. Yoshino joined the battle along with a number of humans and digimon from other realities, and though she and Lalamon didn't participate in the main battle against Quartzmon, she aided in fighting its various copies scattered across the world. Though Quartzmon briefly absorbed the Earth and its inhabitants into itself, it was ultimately defeated, and in the aftermath, Yoshino and Lalamon were returned to where they'd started, separated once again.

Personality: Yoshino is the oldest of the protagonists in the series she originates from, and thus, tries to put on an air of being a mature, older sister figure. She always tries to appear responsible and be a decent role model, and approach the situation with realism and maturity. In some ways, she's even better at doing this than the super-genius Touma, as she is more down to earth and more aware of how to live a simple day-to-day life than he is.

However, she also has some immature traits, such as messiness and laziness, and can easily be embarrassed when such things come to light (this is usually thanks to Lalamon). What's more, she can be rather catty and incredulous when responding to Masaru's actions, meeting his over-the-top responses with sarcasm and weariness. Of all the characters, Masaru is the one she's most likely to bicker with. In addition, despite the fact that they are close, Lalamon is always quick to point out the holes in Yoshino's claims, knowing full well that Yoshino needs to be reminded she has a bit more growing up to do.

Nevertheless, she is still supportive of those around her, even if it comes with a bit of bewilderment and sarcastic behavior. At her core, she is a kind and loving person, and deeply cherishes the people around her. She is particularly supportive to younger people like Ikuto and Masaru's sister, Chika, and she shows respect to her elders and superiors. In regards to Masaru, however, she never wastes an opportunity to remind him she has seniority over him (both in age or as a member of DATS), and will tease him or halfheartedly try and get him to do favors for her in exchange for his help (this is, of course, affectionate and not done in seriousness by the end of the series).

Earlier in her life, Yoshino was possessed by self doubt due to never being able to live up to her parents' expectations or her sisters' achievements. When serving as a member of DATS, this began to grow even worse, as both Touma and Masaru were capable of far more amazing feats than she was. Her and Lalamon suffering numerous defeats at the hands of their opponents only added to this anxiety, and after her encounter with MetalPhantomon and subsequent illness, Yoshino became convinced she was worthless. However, Lalamon managed to remind Yoshino of what their bond meant to her, and she managed to overcome her issues and reach a new level of power.

Now, Yoshino is a much more confident and stable person. Since being seperated from Lalamon, she has grown further in her own way in the hopes that they meet again. As shown by the end of the series where she was able to use her digisoul physically, Yoshino is more willing to get her hands dirty, though she has a long way to go before she's able to throw punches at Digimon. In a way, knowing both Touma and Masaru has changed her just as much as being partners with Lalamon, with them both serving as examples of how to be more daring (in Masaru's case) and approach situations with thinking (in Touma's case).

Yoshino has a strong sense of justice and duty, which largely comes from her service as a member of DATS. Of the trio, she's the one most likely to pull rank and focus on following the letter of their orders. This was what made working with Masaru so difficult, early on. After being made a fugitive due to Kurata's machinations, this has lessened to a degree, but this isn't something Yoshino will ever grow out of and isn't necessarily a drawback. From the series' epilogue, we know that she goes on to become a policewoman, so it's reasonable to say that being someone who "protects and serves" is important to her.

Yoshino doesn't suffer those who commit injustice, and will fight against such people as strongly as any one of her comrades. This is shown in her battle with Ivan, and her intolerance for his actions as an underling of Kurata's despite having an excuse for it. Yoshino isn't as good at making dramatic speeches or throwing as Masaru is, but she'll fight just as hard as he does.

That being said, as much as Yoshino has grown, part of her will never be able to fully leave behind her moments of self doubt and insecurity. Furthermore, she's definitely felt Lalamon's loss, and in some ways her partner serves as an emotional crutch, helping Yoshino to do things that she wouldn't be able to fully realize on her own. However, Yoshino is much better equipped to handle these aspects of herself, and her bond with Lalamon and the example she and the others set for her serves to help her continue on, even if they might not be physically present. After all, isn't that what partnership is all about?

Abilities: As DATS was more or less a covert law enforcement agency, Yoshino is skilled in matters of protocol, investigation, and law. Of the three primary members of DATS that the series focuses on, Yoshino is the one shown using these skills the most.

She's also old enough to drive a car. This is important.

Digi-Soul: Yoshino's Digi-Soul is the manifestation of her emotions and her bond with Lalamon, which takes the form of a swirling mass of pixels around her body. She can use it in conjunction with her Digivice Burst to evolve Lalamon to her higher forms, in which case it takes the form of a pink aura around her hand for the Adult level, a full body aura for the Perfect level, an aur aura that intensifies to white as it's funneled into her digivice for the Ultimate level, and a solid, un-pixelated aura for Burst Mode.

Though Yoshino is not a fighter and never made a habit of using it the way Masaru did, Yoshino showed in the last episode the ability to use her Digi-Soul the way he does and increase her physical strength. At this point, it's involuntary and not something she has control over, but she has the potential to harness it in a way that would allow her strength to grow in accordance with Lalamon's current evolutionary level. It would just take a fair amount of work.

As Digi-Soul is used to tri9gger evolution while also being connected to Yoshino's emotions, the higher level she goes requires a greater deal of emotional resolve. In particular, the Burst Mode is something that can only be used in matters of great importance that trigger a strong emotional response in Yoshino.

Digimon: Yoshino's Digimon partner is Lalamon, a digital life form with a physical form. She is capable of evolving with the power of Yoshino's Digi-Soul, and should she be struck with a lethal amount of damage, she'd revert to her egg form. In this case, Lalamon would later be reborn, but whether she retained her memories or not depends on Yoshino's personal strength.

Her first, or Baby stage, is called Budmon, and the form she is in immediately after hatching. However, she is mature enough to have developed into her child stage, Lalamon, which is the form she is most of the time. Lalamon is able to fly using the propeller-like leaves on her head, and the special attacks are "Nuts Shoot", in which she spits explosive seeds from her mouth, "Sing a Song", a pleasing melody that puts its opponents to sleep, and "Lala Screw", in which she uses her propeller leaves as a buzzsaw.

Her evolved forms are:
Sunflowmon (Adult Level) - A combination of a sunflower and a dragon-like creature capable of flight and firing blasts of sunlight from her face. This form is relatively weak.
Lilamon (Perfect Level) - A fairy-like Digimon with the ability to fire blasts of energy from her hands, fly, and strike with extending limbs or waves of force among other attacks. Lilamon shows a marked increase in power from Sunflowmon.
Rosemon (Ultimate level) - A Digimon resembling a beautiful woman. She wields a whip made of thorns, a rapier, and can take on a glowing form that unleashes blasts of bewitching energy.
Rosemon Burst Mode (Ultimate level, Mode Change) - A more powerful form of Rosemon and Lalamon's final form, armed with multiple jewels that she can manipulate the movement of, along with a mantle composed entirely of energy.

Digivice: The Digivice Burst is what links Yoshino and Lalamon together. In addition to channeling her digi-soul and funneling it to Lalamon, evolving them straight to the level their partner has provided the right amount of power for. Its current form is the one it took after Yoshino unlocked a Digi-Soul capable of evolving Lalamon to the Ultimate level, healing the damage it took when she'd tried to do so unsuccessfully earlier and "evolving" itself into its current appearance.

The Digivice has other functions besides evolution, however.

  • It can be used to hold the Digimon inside it for an unlimited amount of time, in order to better hide them from the public. Lalamon is largely comfortable with this and doesn't seem to mind it. She can be released with the command of "Lalamon, realize".
  • The digivice can be used to track various digimon over short distances, and show a limited map of the immediate area.
  • There is a second area on the digivice than can "receive" Digi-Soul, known as the Air Signal. This is what Yoshino uses to trigger Burst Evolution. It can also be used to power up one's partner, as shown by Masaru using it to bestow GeoGreymon with the Geo Grey Sword, but Yoshino and Rosemon have never used this ability.

Other: Lalamon is Yoshino's Digimon partner and closest friend. The two have been together since Yoshino was a young child, and it goes without saying that the two of them care for one another deeply. Lalamon is also more savvy and clever than Yoshino, and contains a wicked streak that is masked by her normally sweet and amicable personality. When angered, Lalamon can become downright terrifying, as can be shown in the Savers movie when she angrily attacks a group of Goblimon (with sausage nunchucks of all things). However, this is not to say Lalamon is entirely not what she seems... she's still supportive, kind, and helpful most of the time, and has greatly helped Yoshino develop into a stronger and more well rounded person. Besides, Yoshino has such a "streak" herself, and the two tend to cancel each other out in the cases where they're not enabling one another. Lalamon has also shown a degree of jealousy when other people get close to Yoshino.

    ⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

First Person Sample: [Yoshino makes her presence on the network known for the first time, trying to do her best to appear nice and approachable]

Ah, hello! My name is Fujieda Yoshino... and I guess I'm one of the newest people to end up here. [she laughs nervously] I imagine you're all tired of introductions... I imagine they tend to flood the place around this time? I'm just guessing though, from all of the people showing up at once.

But I suppose I should tell you about myself, eh? Well, I'm nineteen years old, for one. I like to play the piano, I recently enrolled in the Yokohama police academy... ah, erm, I guess some of you might not know where that is, eh heh.

... And ah, I'm not alone here. I came with my partner, Lalamon, so you might see her around with me. She's not human, and... well, explaining just what she is is kind of a long story. But we've been together for a long while and were recently separated, so what's really important is that we're together again.

That's all I have to say, I suppose. If any of you out there need someone to help you out, feel free to look me up. We have to set a good example and keep the peace, right?
